The system uses any available water source as the fill medium, allowing fast, cost-efficient flood defence that is scalable, reusable, and requires minimal specialist equipment.
Deployment of over 3000m frontage reduced flooding risk to critical assets, prevented property damage, and enabled uninterrupted emergency access.
Problem Scope
Seasonal and storm-driven runoff raises water levels in rivers, creeks, and drainage channels, causing overtopping and uncontrolled spread into adjacent low-lying properties.
Traditional defences are slow to construct, expensive, or permanent and unsuitable when rapid temporary protection is needed.
Emergency responders and property owners need a solution that can be deployed quickly using available local water to form a reliable barrier while maintaining access for evacuation and service vehicles.
Solution Overview
Product: Double Dam™ or Triple Dam™— a water-filled barrier manufactured from heavy-duty polymer fabric with internal stabilizing elements that prevent rolling and maintain alignment under flow.
Fill medium: Any available water source such as local surface water supplied directly from the threatened water body, nearby ponds or fire hydrants, minimizing logistics and eliminating bulk transport of sand or water.
Deployment model: Establish flood mitigation requirements, position the appropriate size of Double Dam™ or Triple Dam™ along the protection line, connect fill hose(s) to the integral fill ports and fill to specified operating height.
Key Technical Features
Fabric: UV-stable, abrasion-resistant thermoplastic composite with welded seams and reinforced end closures.
Internal stabilizers: Longitudinal baffles that maintain cross-sectional shape, provide stability and prevent lateral migration under load.
Typical section dimensions: available in 0.6 m, 0.9 m, 1.2 m, 1.5 m,1.8m and 2.4m operational heights; standard modular lengths of 15 m (up to 30 m) per unit that couple with a simple overlap.
Fill and empty rate: single 15 m section fills in approximately 30 minutes using a 50mm pump at typical river intakes; complete 300 m x 1 m barrier can be assembled and filled in under 6 hours with two crews.
Service life and reuse: re-usable and repairable; designed for 10+ deployments with routine inspection; fabric replacement panels allow long-term lifecycle management.
Controlled draining and recovery once threat subsides; clean, inspect, and store units for next use.
Transport and handling: collapsed units can be stowed either rolled or folded. A storage location out of the elements prolongs life cycle and usage.
Measured Benefits
Speed: full 300 m x 1 m high protection line assembled and filled in under 6 hours using two 3-person crews.
Cost efficiency: site-fill eliminates hauling thousands of sandbags or truckloads of water, lowering direct deployment cost by an estimated 60 percent versus comparable sandbag operations for similar coverage.
Footprint and access: low profile and removable, preserving site access for emergency vehicles and utilities.
Performance: internal stabilizers prevent lateral displacement without the use of ad hoc anchors and strapping compared to single-tube barriers, improving required installation time and maintaining an effective placement.
Environmental: uses existing surface water and municipal fire suppression water supply, avoids introducing foreign sediments, and leaves no permanent disturbance to protected lands.
Real-World Example Metrics
Coverage achieved: up to 3000 m linear defence at up to 1.8 m operational height protecting critical community infrastructure, homes, businesses and environmentally sensitive locations.
Damage avoided: conservative insured-loss estimate for the protected footprint up to CAD 522 million based on local building stock and historical flood claims.
Reuse turnaround: units cleaned and redeployed each flood season since 2021.
Risks and Mitigations
Risk: strong currents and debris strike. Mitigation: upstream debris screens and easy access to couplers for emergency draining.
Risk: vandalism. Mitigation: routine monitoring and security patrol.
